    Question re: keywords in url

I'm probably over thinking this but let's say I was developing a travel site and wanted to geographically structure seo-friendly urls and also mirror hierarchy.

    Like so:

    example.com/vacation-packages/uk-tours/scotland-tours

would the fact that "tours" are in there twice be overdoing it?

    What about this?
    example.com/vacation-packages/uk-tours/scotland-tours/edinburgh-tours.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

I would say you are over-doing it (not by much though)

    But,

    What about...
    example.com/vacation-packages/tours/scotland/edinburgh
    example.com/vacation-packages/tours/Uk

Your "tours" page can carry all the locations.

Keywords in URL do not change anything or close to anything in my experience to the point that I'm redesigning my site and cutting out all sub folders in URLS.

    What I would do is

exemple.com/package/package name as product canonical URL

exemple.com/packages/ as canonical for main packages category (country selection)

exemple.com/scotland-tours/ as canonical for main scotland packages

etc.... much shorter and clearer, you can also serve the pages from longer URL as long as the canonical is the right one.

But this is just my personal preference.

Thanks but not really going to help much. The purpose of keeping "edinburgh" and "tours" together is because I want to rank for that phrase. Tours as a directory is just repetitive of vacation-packages.

Keywords definitely make a difference in the url. I have seen this from my own experience over the years.

You have used "tours" word 3 times in a url. That is considered as keyword stuffing. Yes you can use locaion in the url but only once. There should not be keyword stuffing.

Totally agree! Keyword stuffing (especially in URL) is a bad habit if we can say so. Keep in ming Google's EMD update as well.

URL should be user friendly so that people finds it easier to remember so that if they want to visit your website or page it easier for them to do that

The value of "exact match domains" has plummeted over the past few years. Every year keywords in the URL or in your copy matter a little less.
