Primary domain doesnt show up in google. alias domain does.

My client had their earlier website at www.abc.com which was the only domain name.
when they went for a redesign, they purchased a new hosting with a new primary domain www.xyz.com but retained the earlier one as domain alias pointing to the same hosting.
the new domain name never shows up on google, but the old domain name still shows up.

Please advise what would be wrong?

It could be that that is how Google has indexed it or they may have some links pointing to the old primary domain so google finds it more relevant. That is just a theory and could be a wrong theory. I will research more into this because I am curious to know as well
