Pharmacy, gambling and porn links

Could a whole site be penalized because some pages have links to pharmacy, gambling or porn site links?

Pharmacy, gambling and porn sites are not in and of themselves considered bad neighborhoods. It depends on how they link out and what type of shady stuff they do.

Check if they are indexed, carry PR and if they have any backlinks. Also be sure to check the backlinks for the same things. Some sites in bad neighborhoods can still carry PR but some dont so if you see any that dont it probably means you are in a bad neighboorhood.

What do you think about inserting a line in the site's robots.txt so no crawler will crawl the pages where these links are posted? I don't really care about the pages being indexed. I have just 2 pages like this, out of more then a thousand, but for certain reasons I have to leave the pages up.

I recently had a link exchange request from a Viagra site which claimed to be reputable and when I did a 'linkxx' in Yahoo I found they had filled some recently deceased Florida police officer's obituary guestbook with hyperlinks for all their sites. I think that says a lot about some of these sites ethics (or the lack of them)! It payes to check what these sites get up to BEFORE you link to them as you say!

You can do that to try to protect yourself but then you are cheating the person you traded links with. If any legitimate recip link partners see that robots file, you run the risk of them removing your link.

You could also use the nofollow although it is the same issue as above...if you agreed to trade links and are benefiting from a link on their site, its a bit underhanded to then take away their benefit without them knowing.

Deffinately do your homework before linking to them.

Spend 10 minutes just having a look at who else links to them and where they link to and so on...

normally a quick search on a site gives you a certain feeling as soon as the first results come up for them.

It can also be detrimental to certain directory submissions who can have strict 'anti' policies towards links of disrepute.
