Post On-Page SEO - What you need to know

    *** Edit ***

This thread will not be updated anymore, however you can find an update article on the subject here: https://www.how-to.io/on-page-seo/
I will try to keep this post as complete as possible and update it regularly. Thanks for your understanding

    *** Note ***

Before adding a link to a post outside the forum I requested the approvals of the other moderators. Linking outside of the forum should be avoided and this thread should not be taken as an example on the matter.

    ************
In this post I will try to explain what is On-Page SEO in 2016 and how it should be properly implemented. As you surely all know, SEO is mainly divided into two different sections, On-Page and Off-Page, but in this thread I will only look at the On-Page section. Let's dive in.

    SEO On-Page

    Keyword research
Before you start any SEO action, you need to perform a Keyword research to understand what your potential costumers will search when they are looking for your products but also understand the level of competition of each keyword opportunity. For most of you (especially if you are not SEO initiates or professionals) ranking on certain terms will be very hard if not totally impossible, If major companies are willing to pay up to 80 dollars a click on Adwords campaign, there is a lot of chance that ranking with pure SEO will be a very long and hard task.
To perform a keyword research you don't need a premium software, there are a lot of free tools available on the internet today, the first one being Adwords Keyword planner, but you can also take a look at SERPs Rank Checker or other free alternatives. I will not list premium programs here, just check out google if you want to find them.
Once you extracted a full keyword list and you refined it to a list of accessible Keywords, start segmenting it semantically. As doing this you should start to notice that logical website architecture as well as an internal linking scheme are poping-out. I would generally recommend to create a single content webpage by keyword by you can groupe some terms by synonyms.

    Copywriting
Content, content, content, this is the main factor that will push your pages up the ranking ladder. But do not write for Google!!! Write for your visitors, be informative, be unique, these are your two main advantages. Wiki sites are showing on lots of queries because they answer questions in a specific way. If you try to rank on the term «seo» because you are a SEO company, there are lots of chances that you're not what Googlers are looking for when they type «seo» in the search engine, the chance is they are looking for a definition not a service provider.
Now this being said content is divided into several parts and here is how you can make the best out of it:

Text: when writing content always have your final user in mind, make a proper use of title tags, only use one H1 per page and divide your content into section each one starting with a H2 or H3 (a bit like if your were typing a university paper on word).

    Code:
    <h1> main page title </h1>
    	<h2> first section title </h2>
    		<h3>First section subpart</h3>
    		<h3>Second section subpart</h3>
    	<h2> second section title </h2>
    		<h3> section subpart</h3>
    	<h2> third section title </h2>
    		<h3>first section subpart</h3>
    		<h3>second section subpart</h3>
    …
For Search engines words in bold or embedded in a strong tag have an increased value, but you must not abuse them. The main use of these tag is to make parts of your text stand out. So use them to help your users understand your page content in a single eye look. If you can insert a keyword it's even better but don't make it your primary goal.
Last but not least there is a really nice feature that is not used by a lot of web masters... It is called Micro data. These tiny pats of code are 100% invisible on your pages but can make a very big difference in helping out bots understanding your content, make sure you use them. For full info check out schema.org.

Images : Choose your images wisely because they are a great way to make the visitor read your content. To optimise them, be sure to use the file name, as well as the alt and the title tag. The title tag is the name of your image while the alt tag (shows when the image is not loaded and is used by some programs for blinded people ) is a description of the image. You can include some keywords in there but make sure not to spam them. The following exemple is not to be followed.

    Code:
<img src="/img/best-seo-company-NY.jpg" title="Best seo company in NY" alt="Best SEO company in NY"
Internal links : Internal links help your visitors find more informations on a specific subject on your site. If your write an article about « how to build a wooden house » and you cite a specific way to create a wooden wall, feel free to link to an article explaining « how to build a wooden wall » this will help your visitors digest you information much more easily but it will also help spiders to group your page semantically and to define your website main subject. If you want to see a good exemple of the correct use of internal linking, check out wikipedia.

External links : External links are actually a powerfull SEO feature that today is not used to it's full potential. Linking to pages considered as good sources will give a hint to bots and spiders that you know what your talking about and you are willing to give access to as much information as possible to your users. This is a very nice thing for blogs but if you're building a business website make sure your do not link to your competitors, but to studies and research on a particular subject.

    The title tag
This is the main page name that will show up in your browser tab. It is very important to make it informative, unique and to include your main keyword for two reasons. The first is that that it is the first thing users will see in the SERPs, the second is that it is one of the major SEO On-Page factors .

    The meta description tag
Even if some minor search engines still use meta description as a ranking factor Google and other major Search engines don't. Spamming your keywords in here is useless, but this doesn't mean that you can forget about meta descriptions. This description shows right under you title tag in SERPs so it is one of the first things Googlers will see and it will influence your page CTR, so you need to make it appealing. If you don't know what to write take a look at Adwords results for the query, when a company spends money on adwords they generally run A/B tests to find out the best converting phrases to maximise it's ROI.

    The meta Keywords
As for Meta descriptions major search engines do not use meta-keywords as a ranking factor anymore. You could theoretically just not use them, but if you have a second, you can fill or main keywords (as always no spam), this will not help you rank but website audit tools might use them to analyse your page and give it an SEO optimisation score so you won't have to specify your main keyword for each page.

    The page Url
As Google claims, the search engine can understand any type of url even if it contains ?id=12 but using a clean url structure will help your users understand your website structure and navigate directly through the adress bar. It's also good to notice that including a keyword in a url is considered to give a little ranking boost.

    Your website architecture
Using a correct website architecture helps Google digest your website as a whole as well as helping your visitor find his way through your content. A good UX and a good digestion for bots generally end up in good rankings

Other thing I will discuss in another thread:
There are other factors such as robots.txt files, duplicate content, W3C compliancy, Accessibilty, mobile friendliness that also are important but this thread is already long so I will discuss them later on in another thread that will speak more in depth of User Experience.

On page SEO means having every possible information about a particular thing or the other, a searcher is searching for, available in one page itself.
Avoiding a searcher from the hassle of clicking page after page, for an information or the other, points, about a particular topic or the other.
Ultimately, giving one the comfort, pleasure, enjoyment, fun etc., which he/she is going to experience by opting for on page SEO services offered
by Google and probably other search engines in the scene.

I'll get to that in my next post about User experience and accessibility. I thought this post was already long enough to read but thanks for pointing it out.

Hi Clive, there are many sites those have been published similar kind of checklists every time.

I know I am wrong here but this kind of checklists I am finding steady from last 10 years.

On below thread, JagNet's have mentioned similar kind of stuff at oct 7th, 2008.

On-Page Optimisation -- An Introductory Guide

By the way, people are still discussing Meta tags. See below some old threads. I am sure If Rod is still present here then discussion could be different
What are the differences between meta "description" and meta "Keywords"
What are the differences between meta "description" and meta "Keywords"
    Regarding meta descriptions

So, previously I added my complimentary comments in above thread.

Piere, but I am looking more update from your end in your given URL and hope you will update very soon.

I also want to notify for linking back to your own blog in this way is not preferable for newbies to make posts back to their own site after just 10 posts or something. Piere has been a member here for a long while and also admin at this time and making exceptional Posts like this one
