I had my site crawed by a spider simultor and it said it could not access the page due to the heading.
What is the best heading to use. eg; <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> |

Yeah, Lose this junk:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> Every site I have ever owned (over 100) ranked very well with the following format: <html> <head> <title></title> <metatags>

Remember with SEO (and alot of other instances) the only dumb question is the one that is never asked. |

Speedie - Conforming to some sort of html standard does no harm at all. If nothing else it will stop my internet enabled microvave oven from lurking miserably in the corner of the kitchen because it can't understand your site.
Select your favourite doctype from: http://www.w3.org/QA/2002/04/valid-dtd-list.html Then you can become a validation fanatic using: http://validator.w3.org/ So be nice to my microwave. It gets bored during the day and likes to surf. I need to keep it entertained - the other day it got bored and cooked one of my VORDbots. ![]() Last edited by VORD : April 8th, 2004 at 05:51 PM. |

vord is right too.
he knows web accessibility standards and stuff like that. someday that header stuff may be like 'required' or something. not today. vord wants everyone to act all 'grown up' right now and conform. |

You guys are quite right - the web gets along quite well without doctypes. The main advantage of a doctype is that it allows you to validate your html and css using the W3C tools (and Speedie's search engine simulator).
In the future we will see new internet browsers built into things like my microwave oven, or even mobile phones. For cost and weight reasons these browsers might not have the error correction of Internet Exploder. The doctype itself won't be a problem (it's commonly not used so the browsers will be designed around that) but incorrect code - missing tags and the like - might cause a few display problems, hence the need to validate. So conform now before it's too late! ![]() |
