One to One Redirects in Excel?

Hello,

I need to redirect thousands of pages and am trying to figure out the most effective way to do it. I was thinking I could cut and paste the xml sitemap into an excel file. Then put the url that I want the old one to redirect to in the cell next to it.

But I wouldn't be able to see what the old url pages look like. And would have to have two browsers open, one for the old urls and one for the new urls.

Any advice on how best to get through tons of redirects?

Thanks

Is this a redesign, or are you just doing some housecleaning?

If the redesign has already gone live, then you could use GWT to get a list of your 404s. This would give you your list of old URLs.

Export this to csv and you've got your spreadsheet started.

Then you'll have to go through the new site finding the new versions, which you put in the second column.

Then run a macro to export the results into a text file. Copy & paste to .htaccess and you're done.

The hardest part is finding the new URLs.... but what could make this easier is if you know which pages were ranking and which were not. Not really a need to redirect pages that weren't really showing up (unless those pages have in-bound links to them.... include these).

I have the old URLs and the new URLs. They probably be gotten from the xml sitemap. I would just run a crawl xml-sitemaps.com after the new site was uploaded and delete the previous pages.

Just last month we redirected hundreds of millions pages.

We did it via mod rewrite. Your url must have pretty specific structure , Otherwise its very hard to write code for

there's no 301 rule. URL's get rewritten on the fly. from dynamic to static counterparts

( p.s:we had @ 100 pages indexed last month. Today we have 200,000 & trending upwards. )

We have a kick a*s developer. If you want i can give you his email in PM.

pps: I wouldn't go the excel macros way.

hope this helps.
Best,
-AD
