You will learn that in SEO there are basically two main areas.

1) On Page SEO

2) Off Page SEO

On page is something you have a lot of control over. It is the method of creating your site and structuring the code and content in a way that search engines will look kindly upon.

Off page SEO is all about links to your site, where they came from, how much value the link has and the kewyords and content that the link came from.

Many people here have links in the sigs for beginners (mine included). There are a few threads, try searching this site or Google.

Once you have learnt a bit more, post some more specific questions.

Slight Ammend to above - I find it easier thinking about 3 main focus for seo:

1) On Page SEO (Text Content & Page Titles)

2) On Site (Internal Link Architecture)

2) Off Page SEO (external Links)

Search Engine Optimization on-page

First, do you keyword research and find out what you will SEO for. Then, build your site and content around these keywords. Go through the site page by page and make sure they are built up to the current web standard. Use as clean code as possible. Avoid graphics or animation heavy sites.

Build good solid content that attracts users and links. Keep the content fresh and updated.

Some on-page SEO techniques are about using the right keywords in the right amount in the title and other meta tags. Create internal links and choose the right anchor texts for these links.

If you are starting out, check out some books and they provide the basic techniques as to what to do. Onpage optimization is very important. If you get it done right, you may see it shown up quickly on MSN. Yahoo and Google take links more heavily than onsite SEO.
