Which (old) SEO methods should I ditch - and why?

Some say that SEO is all about content. Some say it's all about links.
I'm pretty sure that both are still pretty important.

However... every time people ask how to go about it, they are told to
submit to search engines, have lots of meta keywords, update their
    websites daily, etc etc

What I want people to know is:

Which SEO tricks that were valid in -- say -- 2003 are no longer useful
    now?

I don't want to read what should be done. I want to read what should
NOT be done anymore. And please add: why not.

I'll give one and see what everyone else has to say:
Keywords in description tags because they are no longer an element of SEO

    Ditch all of them.

I know you have heard this quote before... [paraphrasing] "do SEO as if there are no search engines!"

    That's it!

We focus so much attention on what we can do and ignore what we SHOULD DO.

I could say that the link QUANTITY game is dead. It's a QUALITY Site + Relevance game now. 2003 It was a Quantity + Quality game.

Updating content doesn't need to be a daily chore.
excessive links with exact match anchors is also dead to a degree, a large degree but a degree nonetheless.

I also agree with "do SEO as if there are no search engines!"
unless you really know what your doing. there's way too many variables one must know and do if and when "doing SEO for the search engines!" is the case.

Actually... completely irrelevant is today's game. How relevant is "click here" to any phrase you desire ranks for?

These are "natural links" or rather a call-to-action link which is for the patrons' of the site doing the linking which means there is nothing unnatural about them.

I will say "stop using spinned content" (on/off the site), as it will not help your rank, additionally it can lead you to penalty.

Secondly "stop building sitewide backlinks", as one link from a domain is equal to 100s of links from same domain.

Sitelinks are secondary search listings/link references in Google SERPs.

Your point isn't about those, and your point isn't really accurate either.

So have you given up building anything but branded links?

I haven't build any links "directly" since 2011... even keyword links for any 'expired domains' that is redirected is similar to brand-based or call-to-action-based links for unrelated domains just using the link juice.

I have giving up using automatic posting tools (GSA Ranker) - no quality there. I have given up spinning ("Routine playing of a didgeridoo minimizes daytime drowsiness."), I have given up Web 2.0, I have given up keyword stuffing, I have given up anything that is not natural and manual, 'cause it just don't work anymore. I have hung up my black hat and donned a white hat. Okay, it's not really a white hat, I'm old and going gray.

stop single business description for multiple business listing. Google wants unique description for every business listing. this way you will get unique pages.
