What about the use of keyword you are trying to rank for as the anchor text? Is that still being used today?

All though there are lots of comments already posted in this thread - still as this is a good initiative from dzine to help the newbies; I would like to post my thoughts.
I think W3C Validation and Bold/Strong Tags can be ignored.

    - I think should stop using same title and description for multiple page.
    - Stop doing search engine submission bcz it's now 2014 search engines are to smart it's automatically catch new websites on www.
    - And also stop using any one single technique for increase ranking. You have to use all techniques together.

Ditching old SEO methods is a need only as most of quick result methods are not working these days. So play smart. Stick to very basics and while doing optimization think broad as only that way you will be able to think bigger and such tactics helps.

1 Quality and Refine Keyword Research Required.
    2. Using of Synonym in WebContent and Metas.
    3. Think only being END user and generate quality content accordinly.
    4. More User generated content - Google will gave more importance
    5. Start building relationship as it will always be counted in a longer run.
    6. Ask your colleagues, friends and customers to rate you..review you.

No, I'm sorry, but it won't.

Life is too short for a decent SEO to sit through an 8 minute video by Matt "grain of salt" Cutts, with a pointless text intro added by some SEO "guru" I've never even heard of.

This is a forum. It's text based.

I'm pretty sure that both are still pretty important.

However... every time people ask how to go about it, they are told to
submit to search engines, have lots of meta keywords, update their
    websites daily, etc etc

What I want people to know is:

Which SEO tricks that were valid in -- say -- 2003 are no longer useful
    now?

I don't want to read what should be done. I want to read what should
NOT be done anymore. And please add: why not.
I could say Anchor Text Links have lost its importance and now it is only the Semantic Keywords that rules the web! SEO is getting tougher than previous, all we have to do is to do justice to search engine in order to stay alive!

The keywords in the meta description are not a ranking factor but the searched keyword will still be bolded and could increase CTR.

How much ever the things have changed, there will be an impact on old things. At the end of the day SEO depends on content and links. With having proper contents and links how does a site get reflected in organic way ??

Stop adding keywords on meta tags, stop stuffing keywords in content. Quality is more important so try to do some quality link building, avoid web2.0 profiles, directory submission, guest blogging, and other spammy link building methods.
