Navigational .js file - will site map link help
Greetings. I came across a site the other day, which is www opencube .com. They offer quite a nifty tool I must say for developing various types of navigational bars. They market the product as being search engine friendly, which in part is a joke as their idea of search engine friendly is placing a hidden div in the code with a link for every page in that div. My question is this. If I use this product, and have a link in EVERY page that falls immediately after the <body> tag and links to a site map that has every page listed and linked to, should I be ok?

Thanks for your feedback. I would contest the javascript observation though. MAYBE 1% of people have javascript disabled, and that is a BIG MAYBE. Go to www.thecounter.com and click on global stats. I am basing my representation on their stats of millions and millions of users. As people become more computer savy, they realize javascript is harmless. All that being said, if I do use the .js nav system and do include a site map link right after the body tag, should I be ok? I would think so, as search engines are going to hit that link and follow the url's from there to index the entire site, no?

Its entirely upto you what you do with your site and yes there is only a small percentage of people have javascript disabled.
You can put all sorts of .js and java navigation on your site and provide a html site map. Remember that it is a very bad idea to do it and it will hinder your seo campaign. If you are prepared to accept that it is bad and will hinder you. Then add the java navigation to your site at your peril. Please can you come back to the forums in a few months and tell us the results of your installation of the seo unfriendly navigation? ![]() |

Thanks for your continued input. Can you please tell my WHY it will hinder an SEO campaign. The main issue with seach engines is that they need to be able to spider sites, yes? If the first element they come across is an anchor tag to another page that has a link (and description) to EVERY page in a web site from which they can continue spidering and indexing, WHY is using a .js navigational menu a bad thing? When search engines come across a .js in the code, do they say to themselves, "Whoa boy, this guy is using Javascript, we're outta here. Get your things and lets go!"?
