First of all thank you all, who made this post one of the most viewed posts with 17,000 views and one of the most replied with 105 replies.

When I posted the initial/original post it was 12 April 2003, almost 2 years ago, I have never thought it will be this popular.

Now my question is, if you have used my initial rules and the additional posts from the other valued posters, on top of it, how much did this whole thread helped you to gain higher rankings?

In other words where were you in at that time (before and after):

- which search engine
- how many result pages
- what keywords
- position number
and where are you now.

If you could be kind enough to answer that then we can all make this whole thread a more valuable test or a guide for the new comers.

For me, one of the best achievement, (using the initial post and additions) so far is:

Before
- most of the major search engines
- 10 milion
- simple website design
- no where to be found in the top 1000

After
- most of the major search engines
- 30+ milion
- simple website design
- in the top 5

Hoping to see some big success results from all of you.

If I was going to put together a 404 page and upload it, what do I call it, where do I put it, and how do I get my server to recognize this as the page to use?

(BTW, great thread!)

Can't you just edit or replace the existing documents? In my case, a 404 error coughs up a file named "not_found.html" in the /error_docs directory (which is next to the /httpdocs directory). If not, and if you have the opportunity to play with your .htaccess file, then check out this thread which also covers custom error docs.

P.S: make your custom docs > 512 Bytes, or else IE will come up with its own...

Sorry for all the newbie questions....

In looking through all the folders via the ftp program I use, I don't see any error folders from which these error pages are pulled. Nonetheless, looking through error logs I see 403's, 404's with a .shtml extension.

I tried to find some sort of option with the program that might unhide these files if they're hidden, but no luck. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Use HTAccess

Add this line to the .htaccess file (edit it with a text editor like Notepad):

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.yoursite.com/404page.html

Hope this helps.
[I am assuming you are running Linux/Apache]

Regards
WC

PS: Yes, one important note: Please use the relevant forum for posting 404 issues, as this thread is meant for SEO Tips & I keep on receiving message posting notification emails even when someone is replying against this 404 issue. No hard feelings, but let us streamline the issues.

Robert, use your domain's Control Panel instead... It usually has a built-in file manager giving access (or not) to all the special dirs. Mind you these directories are NOT subdirs of /httpdocs/ but appear next to httpdocs, i.e. one level higher...

404 page thread

Hi again,

I believe there is a specificaly dedicated thread for this -404- topic, why don't you just go and read it and post there instead of here?

Some of the people who contributed to this thread are waiting to see the replies to my post, asked a few posts above, which went un-noticed because of the 404 posts you made.

Thanks in advance,

excellent thread! I'm glad I found this thread so I can continue implementing new techniques. I started SEOing a few sites which are in an ultra competitive field so I can use all the tricks I can get!

What's the trick to get G/Y/M to crawl you more often? I learned a nice trick with adding RSS and then use that in your my yahoo and my msn profiles, also got a few oneway PR4 links from highly relevant sites. G and M crawled me each like 50 times a few days ago but they're not coming back for more. Y only did it 20 times or so. Is the key to add more content? Or something else?

I welcome some more additions to enlarge this MUST HAVE TIPS, so that the new comers to SEO arena can get better results.

Here is my standard suggestions that might help:

Optional but very important:

A - Own your-domain-name-dot-com
B - Host your site on a reliable server

1 - Shorten the title to 55 chars
2 - Add the robots tag
3 - Place the robots.txt in your root on your server
4 - Get rid of the js in the code and put it in an external file
5 - Use css instead of color, size and font tags
5 - Change the link buttons or js links in to text links
6 - Make sure to have a site map page
7 - Make sure you have 404 page
8 - At the bottom of each page use menus as text links
9 - Make sure your page code is not bigger than 100 K
10 - Submit your site to ODP and Yahoo Dir, make sure to select the right cat
11 - Pay special attention to your content
12 - Try to get as much as relevant links you can
13 - Read each search engines guide lines and follow them strictly
14 - Don't spam
15 - Don't use doorway pages
16 - Don't cloak
17 - Always come and ask for advice on this board
18 - And pray hard that the big G appreciates all your efforts

This will help as long as you follow each rule here ;)

I was wondering if there is a tool you guys use to see if what you are doing is working. Like a tracker to see where you are located on search engines exactly by number and then you can monitor this. I am new to all of this so excuse me if I am naive.

Don't you just ban the visitors having Mozilla/MSIE browsers with Windows 95/98/2000/XP from your site by putting this in your robots.txt? Not every user-agent you see in yuor logs is a crawler/spider/bot, some are good aul human visitors.... User-agent shows their software used for browsing your site. I wouldn't ban them, unless I want to waste a site.

There is a tool here: http://top25web.com/ that finds your site's position for a specific keyword in Google (which is a particular pain in the arse as Google's search results are not numbered in Google itself). For Yahoo, I just use Yahoo itself, go to Preferences and ask it to display 100 results per page, then after I do a search I just press Control-F and enter my site's URL to find it automatically in the results. Pretty much the same with all others too.
