Hi everyone,
I knew absolutely nothing about SEO and had spent so much time trawiling the web and buying books. I just got more and more confused because it seems to me that there is a lot of information out there that just isn't right. I found another book about 6 weeks ago, and I must admit I was rather reluctant to buy it because most of what I have bought has been useless, but I gave in and bought it. I found it really easy to follow and it is written in really easy language (good for me!). I am now getting my site ranked on the first page for a lot of my keyword phrases, some of them even at number 1. My traffic has increased (from virtually zero) and I have a lot more enquiry. I don't sell a product, so I can't compare sales etc and I am only just getting into the tracking side of things, so I can't give actual figures or percentage (yet anyway!) but I am thrilled with the enquiries generated by my site. I have actually been able to quote on 11 projects and I have won 2 of them! I am really happy with the result. I don't think it is any good for people who already know about SEO, but for someone who is new at it (like me), I would recommend it. I wish I had found it ages ago. It would have saved me a lot of stress. I am really new to everything, and I'm not sure whether I am allowed to give the name of it, but it's called easy-seo-book. I guess you can Google it if you are interested. Hope this helps anyone new. Regards Di |

I have a PR4 site but my competitors rank higher with a lower PR WHY?
I feel my site is fairly optomized and I dont understand why i dont rank higher when my PR is higher than theres?
Do the placement of the keywords matter as in do they need to be throughout the page? |

I couldn't resist. The "likely reason" is while you are getting more PageRank per link you receive - they are getting more relevance -- where PageRank doesn't help. |

As far as I can tell, these are not free directories. gimpsy.com's free submission option is currently suspended. I don't even see a free option at goguides.org. The fee is $69.96. |

Yeah a lot of directories right now (especially those new ones) are shifting to paid submission after they have reached that certain PR.

I was recently put in charge of my company's website. I've read most of this thread, and there are a lot of helpful tips in here. Because the thread is three years old, there are some conflicting opinions that I have a few questions about. Any help would be much appreciated.

You are referring to what is called anchor text. It is the actual title of the link that you have pointing to your site. If the page you are attempting to link to has several keywords being targeted, it is advisable to break up the links instead of targeting multiple keywords in one link. If your landing page targets "Blue widgets, Red Widgets and Fancy Blue Widgets" create multiple different links out of it: Blue Widgets Fancy Blue Widgets Fancy Red Widgets Red Widgets This way, you create 4 separate links which will create more relevance for that page rather then trying to cram all of your keywords into 1 link, risking the SE's ability to capture all of the keywords you are attempting to target. I could give you advice on the other questions you had but figured I would leave it to someone more knowledgeable to respond so I didnt give you inaccurate information. |

In fact if you are linking out to quality domains of the same theme it could help build your theme also. It is natural to link out to high quality domains to provide additional information for your visitor and improves customer satisfaction. Careful to link out to bad, spammed domains as this is useless for your visitor and bad for your site reputation. Remember who you linking out defines your neighbor. It is up to you to select who will be your neighbor. You are in control of your external links.

Ok, to go back to people like Sun Tzu, and the famous missive of his, The Art of War, plus about a million cliched statements, such as "Know thy enemy", "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer"....
Research your competition. Take the top 5 positions, at least. Analyze their site. I love SEOQuake for this... check their keyword cloud, get some ideas from there. You can learn alot more about how you can succeed by analyzing the success of others. Plus, by keeping a close watch on them, you can track the directions you should go. Just thought I'd mention it. Thanks for the tips. Another question: should I be loading every page with any and all relevant terms in my meta keywords and meta descriptions or should I be limiting the keywords I put in there. Looking at some my competitors, they seem to have a lot more terms in their meta keywords and descriptions. |
