Is this what Google Analytics says or did you just run a site command? Don't hold the site command to a high standard. If you type site:davegsmith.com it shows 1850 pages indexed but try clicking through the SERPs. When I got to page 12 this number changed to 239.

Thanks Adam, I actually analyzed it via site command only. I have also seen that many of the pages are 404 and many of them are archives. But still I need to know what to do in case it is so and can this effect my website ranking?

Its better that you make a custom 404 error page for your website or redirect 404 error pages to your home page to prevent facing problem with your ranking. Also about number of indexed pages, Google webmaster tools doesn't show real time statistics and it should be updated to show latest statistics.

It definitely can affect your site if you have a lot of 404 pages indexed. If this proves to be the case I would...

    1. Remove all internal links to these pages (if applicable)
    2. Remove those pages from your XML sitemap (if applicable)
    3. Deindex the pages using either your robots.txt file or meta=robots markup
