Meta Tag Analysis
I just ran a Meta Tag Analysis on my website (cklawfirm.com), and the results confuse me. It is not finding any meta tags on my page, but they are in there. I cannot figure out why they are not being seen or found. When I run the same analysis on other sites (using submitexpress.com/analyzer), the meta tags are seen and analyzed.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Sure. The code appears below.

I got it fixed now, but I'm not sue what it is I changed exactly.

I changed the line that said:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

to this:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

Now the meta tag is being recognized. Simply changing "utf-8" to "iso-8859-1" did the trick.

It is better yes.
At the risk of being redundant, you can remove them and it would make no difference. The search engines dont use them anymore. I avoid them altogether as the only thing may be able to do is give you a spam flag.... When used improperly

Thanks. I do understand what you all have been saying about the uselessness of the META tags. SEO seems to be a huge area to learn for a beginner. What would you recommend as first steps to begin to optimize?

1. Keyword research
2. enabling Google Analytics on your website
3. Making sure that your site can be properly navigated and has keyword anchor text within it.
4. Build useful content which will entice your visitors to pick up the phone, email or contact you in some way.
5. Think of creative ways to get links. Sure directory submissions, articles blogs are effective to some extent but if you want to compete with the big dogs you need to go after quality, not quantity.
6. Stay focused on sales and conversions rather than Page Rank and Keyword positions.
