Ignoring Exact Match Domains and assuming all other seo optimization factors are equal does anyone have evidence as to which format the search engines will rank best from an onsite seo point.

Is a sub domain best, for example product.domain

or

is a page/folder best, for example domain/product

or does it not make any difference which I use?
