Well you want to target the keywords which are most achievable in the quickest amount of time and take it from there, personally, the longer tail ones are what i go for first, and continue building up that way !

Planning your keyword targeting for both Short tail and long tail keywords would be recommended. Its all based on what your objective is and what goes hand in hand with your forecasts.. Achieving targeted traffic would be one of the affecting indicator.

Definitely short keywords. People don't use long keyword generally. One thing to remember, user is always in hurry. He will chose only those things which are easily available.

I think you have a pretty clear choice and it's not what you think.

Long tail keywords should offer less competitive terms with less monthly searches. Why not set up inner pages of your site, or categories on your blog to go after these?

Short term or just regular keyword terms offer more competition, but larger rewards. These should be your end goal.

Personally, it's always nice to see a keyword term on Page 1 and then at #1 before too long, so I like to start with long tails and move into competitive places after that.

Hi, I would say long tail keywords are best because they are easy to optimize and you can also plan some keywords which should have short tail keywords included in your long tail keyword to get more benefits for short keyword search of your niche type.

    Short tail vs. Long tail

    Apples & Oranges.

There are just too many external factors to consider to answer blindly.

You have competition, user's intentions, and implementation to consider & without seeing the values for each, it is merely a guess.

Short Tail keywords can be tough to compete. Normally in these highly competitive markets the long tail keywords can be the way to go.
Short Tail - A short 3 word or less keyword phrase
Long Tail - A keyword phrase over 3 words

Check out the competition, and try to go for things will less competition. Usually short tail has more competition, but more monthly searches, so it evens out...

The term "Long-Tail Key Phrase has NOTHING to do with the LENGTH of the key phrase.

"Trees" Can be a long tail keyword

I would suggest to go for long term keywords which includes short term keyword as well. This is because Google use to make like query for searching. So if your long keyword contain your short keyword then you will be in place. For example if you are working on keyword hire joomla developer then you have optimized 3 keywords. Hire joomla developer, hire developer, joomla developer..
