Keywords Strategy - Started with short keywords first or long tail niche keywords

Hi All SEO Expert. I have a question about keywords strategy optimization.

For a brand new website SEO project, you will usually start the off site optimization with short competitive keywords first or long tail niche keywords? Especially the anchor text link methodology.

For instance, if I want to target the following keywords.

    • food store

    • western food store

    • 24 hours western food store

    • 24 hours western food store in UK

General terms are good for traffic, but do not generate sales. If that is what you want - optimize for general terms. Otherwise you better put your efforts into more specific terms describing your product more precisely.

Thanks for the replied. What about target for long tail keywords first, once the ranking improved then slowly go for more competitive keywords? The objective is to increase traffic.

I'll assume that the last two phrases would generate some traffic. I would focus on those because it would be easier and it would help later with harder phrases. Also I would mix up the keyword sentence structure.

Long tails are good but try some keyword research tool to ensure that at least someone is using those key phrases ... it's easy to rank for a 5-worded key phrase but i don't think many people search such long phrases while searching

I would target nothing. If you have a blog ready to go then I'm assuming you already understand your industry/market to some degree. If not, give up now.

If you do, and you have no links, and don't know how (or which) to target keywords, then I'd recommend just simply writing and seeing which words Goolge sends traffic for.

BTW, free version of hittail does the exact same thing as Google Analytics so just stick with that (to mine your own keyword sets). As you get more information you'll get a better idea of what to write next!

But I though even you understand your industry, you need to set a few targeted keywords even when you write a blog post? Because if the client asked to do the SEO, we need to focus on some keywords to show is it improving or moving?

    seo keywords

It ends up that SEO isn't your goal, conversions is. So, with that in mind, what keywords convert the best? Usually long-tail keywords. Which ones? You need to test to find this out.

A quick and dirty Google Adwords campaign using split-testing for the ads and Google's Website Optimizer for the landing pages will show you what keywords, ad content and landing page content converts the best.

Once you complete this then update your website with the performing keywords and content and use the keywords that convert the best in the text of your anchor links.
