I like to include them to spread my target keywords amongst a variety of page positions - eg. title, heading, main text, alt.

Alt tags wont push you up to position 1 but they will help if used properly. Keep them to a max of 6 words per image.

They help you as long as you don't try to spam the search engine by doing this and they are relevant to the search engine if the images are hyperlinks.

Otherwise, the alt words will be counted as text and you are clever enought not to trigger Google's spam filter, you should consider youself lucky.

thanks...another question about modifying it now...

Thanks for the replies...

My site is new and is ranking within top 10 for the keyword phrases I am targeting (freshbot I am assuming)...but should I leave it alone since it is doing well now...or is that any indication of what is to come after the dance?

Regina

ALT tags are worth doing, because other search engines will use them as well as Google's image database. However, I'm afraid they don't count and won't help you in the slightest in Google's normal search database unless the image forms part of a link.

Gringo.

So when checking keyword density, you should turn off alt tags?

It's a tricky question. If you can enable alts only for hyperlinked images... you will come up with some result.

But generally speaking, I do not suggest turning it off.

Yes!

ALT tags are also worth doing because the enhance/improve the "usability" of your site

Remember....the guests who make us money

The big one that a lot of folks miss is the "logo/mark" which IMHO should always have an ALT tag and a link to the home page.
