Keyword density

Is there a should-have keyword density for Google? Or any SE? I noticed most top ranking sites in Google seem to use targeted keywords rather unfrequent - why?

I've noticed the same. I think much more weight has been placed on Anchor text, and to be honest I'm not sure this has worked out wvery well. I think Google have had a great balance in Density / Anchor text weight up until this point.

I am seeing a lot of websites ranking highly for competitive terms and they essential have nothing to do with the topic in question or they are contentless sites. Take for example the term "web hosting", check out the number 19 result (www.xoom.com/) - ok fair enough this was once a great site and I'm sure it probably should have this level of ranking if the site still existed. The site has NO CONTENT whatsoever and the URL shows as the page title. I know WHY this is happening (the inbound links use the term "web hosting" etc..), but is it really fair for a blank page to rank above a site that has visable content, regardless of what inbound links it has? How useful is a blank page to a surfer? I'd rather see spam than a blank page.

I have to be honest and say that I don't like whatever Google have done here, I'm getting seeing those same high quality results that I used to. I've seen people complaining every month about how their sites have gone down and things look bad on the serps, and normally I don't agree all that much .. but this month I think their weights are out of balance.

I think All The Web is producing significantly better results these days that google is!

Darrin,

A bit off point, but where can I find info on what All The Web looks for? My results in All The Web are poor.

I hear you Darrin - amen. The same thing has bothered me for some 2-3 months now, and I don't like it a bit. Due to these changes, pages about knitting shows up when searching for 'loans' in norwegian (lån) - which is, evidently, not very relevant...

And I must agree - alltheweb is producing much better and relevant results nowadays...
