Is it worth purchasing a 2nd domain name?
My clients current domain name is MagazinesUSA.com however I've read that some search engines have trouble figuring out that this url is 2 words so if someone types in "magazines usa" as 2 separate words, my url wouldn't really help to get me to the top of the list however I have heard that hyphenated names such as "magazines-usa.com" do work better. Is this true and if so, is it worth the extra money to purchase this 2nd name or do search engines really not care all too much about this issue?
Thanks. -Goalie35 |

Yes
I vote yes for 2 reasons.
1) I find the dashed version of my site gets better traffic and optimal search engine results. 2) If you/your client become successful then you want to keep this extra version of your domain away from the competition. That is the most important reason. Domains are so cheap, there is no reason not to pick it up and park it. |

Also Two are better then one
But make a smart reroutering the search engine crawlers key density on eatch domain example in ASP this is not consider spoofing . if request.sever(domain) = www.x.com them response.write("<title> BLA BLA </title>") if request.sever(domain) = www.y.com them response.write("<title> BLA BLA </title>") Hope i got the code i'm just dead tired, just email and i will explain if you are interested. LiGhTen, I'm a little confused. I could implement the code you mentioned. That's not really a problem or anything but couldn't I just tell my web host to point both url's to the same home page? Would doing the latter hurt my ranking? Thanks again. -Goalie35 |

Hi
I would say in answer to your question hyphenated domains are better yes! I have tested this and found it to be true. However in this situation - if the existing domain is already well established, and to avoid potential duplicate content - I would stick with the origional domain. If you look at some domain names that contain the search term then you will see that even if the domain is all one word google still higlights the term. It can seperate words but it gives more weight to hyphenated terms. Please note that an underscore does not work in this way as it is "just another character" where as a hypen is a seperator. Please note that the same also applies to file and directory naming. |
