Yap, its important to have a good introduction for your mainpage or introduction pages as they say first impressions,, last.... =)

maybe not credits on SERPs but for your visitors purposses...

do you mean the introduction on your index site?
There you have the perfect chance to describe your website and fill with the most important keywords.
Or do you mean a page that is before your actual page? Like a flash intro? This is in my eyes useless and additionally no user wants to see that.

If you optimise your intro page for a keyword phrase and it ranks high in serps than yes it can help you IF it does not deter your customers from actually buying your product...
Many flash pages are a deterant.
Also if you have a store and you want customers to see your products make then go through fewer pages not more...
