Exclamation Huge ranking drop (technical SEO-issue)

    Hi all,

We experienced huge ranking drops with leducdetailstyling.nl/
For example with the URL leducdetailstyling.nl/21493/Ramen-blinderen

It happened since some technical activities, like IIS speed module in the website, URL rewrite (without the numbers in URL), meta refresh came into the website instead of 301-redirect..., canonicals we're wrong.
Because of the ranking drop I asked the programmer to reverse everything back to how it was before the ranking drop.

But it didn't helped to get the rankings back...
Do you guys see some strange technical SEO-issues in the website?

*Important note: all rankings with the homepage are still the same as befor.
But all the rest of the pages have been dropped in the Google ranking. Maybe because of the URL rewrite?! URL's were with numbers in URL, after our activity's removed and after the reverse all back to the normal (URL's with old numbers).
And since then at the first day of the month, in Webmaster Tools / Search Console we see a huge rise of crawled pages...

    Thanks in advance!

How long ago were the changes reversed?

    Thanks for you reply!

The meta refresh has been removed at 13-1-2017. And last week the IIS speed module has been reversed and the canonicals been fixed.

Could this have happened on or around 7th Feb.
There is currently a lot of talk around about a major core algo update around that time. Its not as far as I am aware been officially confirmed by google as yet but the evidence is mounting something was released.
It appears to be aimed at redefining what google thinks is quality content but all pure guess work from the limited research I have done.

    Thanks for your reply, Chedders!
It did happened at the beginning / half December.

And is it limited to a few keywords? Or a majority?

Almost all of them. Except the keywords that are rankend with the homepage...But all the rest of the pages have been dropped in the Google ranking. Maybe because of the URL rewrite?! URL's were with numbers in URL, after our activity's removed and after the reverse all back to the normal (URL's with old numbers).
And since then at the first day of the month, in Webmaster Tools / Search Console we see a huge rise of crawled pages... Not in proportion with a average day.

When you make changes to URLs like that, you really have to do redirects. But even if you don't, the SEs should figure it out in a month or so..

It doesn't sound related to an algo change, since it is only affecting internal pages. Are you certain EVERYTHING has been reversed? No links, text links, etc. to those internal pages have been removed?

And to be clear, you never used any redirects with these changes?

It will be down to the url changed. Pages that did rank are no longer there
So unless a 301 was in place to tell google where it's gone then ranking will plumit I am afraid as any external links will now not be working

    • DirectHits agrees : Very important point here. Without the 301 redirect to redirect any 'link juice' from IBLs, your pages will not have the same authority.

The URLs have been reversed back to the old ones (with the same numbers / ID in it). So internal- and external links are still working, because it's the same URL.
They were redirected with meta refresh, instead of 301-redirects... After that, I think they were for a little period redirected with 301's until everything has been reversed back to the old URLs.

For a few websites, like this example of leducdetailstyling.nl the rankings did dropped extremely.
But there are also websites, which just dropped a few positions in Google. Most of them are stuck at position five...?! From up 2 or 3.

We probably have this figured out. Especially if there was link juice lost in this scenario, you really would expect a dive. But on the upside, if everything was reversed to EXACTLY how it was before the crash, the SEs should figure it out in a month or so.

(This is assuming that you didn't lose IBLs in the process.)

You need redirects to pass link juice on to the new pages.

To be honest.. I think it was the numerous changes rolled out all at once. Something a lot of us caution against. You have absolutely no idea what caused what. So you put it all back the way it was. Having said that....

I personally think it was the combination of meta refreshes and url changes... combined together, you created a wacked out way of redirecting your urls, you probably lost most of your link juice.. some advice, avoid meta refreshes......Meta Refreshes are commonly associated with cloaking aka black hat,
A little old but applicable... the link for it >>>> https://www.quora.com/Moz-Do-meta-re...affect-ranking

But you are ranking good for your h1 tag and h2 tags. I think you are probably recovering now....
