Question HTTP vs HTTPS & Duplicate Content

I am currently working on a site that has both HTTP and https versions of its pages, therefore creating duplicate content. I am thinking about using the robots.txt to disallow all of the HTTP:// until the https:// get indexed or using redirects to transfer the HTTP to https.

Is this the best approach? Also would there be any negative long term effects?

    Any other ideas?

Also, has anyone ever seen any results about Google preferences for http vs https?

    Thanks!
    Stephanie

I think you'd do better if you redirect and use robot.txt for them if you only want to get indexed with your https content. And as far as i know google doesn't have special preference about https or http.

Yes, I do agree with CyberMad. Use 301 redirects and not 302 redirects.

    Question Same Issue

I'm having the same problem, where our entire site shows up in a site search for http: AND https:. We have over 4000 pages so I'm not sure what the best result would be. We don't have a store, so I'm thinking about canceling the SSL altogether. Does anyone have any thoughts?
