    How to redirect Category pages to Custom landing pages?

    Hi guys,

    Hoping you can help me figure out best way to do this.

    As you likely know, default category pages in Wordpress aren't great and don't allow much customizing in an easy way.
    Instead, I'm looking to create a custom Page with a better layout targeting the Same Keyword - in this case, 'car reviews.'

    My goal is create a new, better page for 'car reviews' which will include a block allowing me to show all posts
    from the current 'car reviews' category page.

    Basically, I don't want 2 pages targeting the same keyword (car reviews) - I can noindex the car reviews category,
    and basically don't want to pass any link juice to it. Or is that even the right way?

    Really hope this question made sense!!

    Appreciate your help.

    The use of a canonical comes to mind here. This would tell Google to funnel all the juice to the canonical url.
    If you have never failed in your life, you have never achieved anything Noteworthy !

    Thanks KnowOneSpecail - that's what I thought but I'm not too familiar with canonicalization.

    So...

    If I have a Category page that's indexing and for keyword 'car reviews' here:

    /new-cars/car-reviews

    I can point to the new canonical url landing Page:

    /car-reviews

    Correct? So I can keep the Category structure, but now the Car Reviews Page will be only be targeting keyword 'car reviews?'

    But if that Category page's purpose is basically to file the posts, make it easier to include in my new Page layout,
    and not really intended for readers to view it (because they're directed to the new page, not category page)
    - then is canonical urls still the right approach?

    Opposed to say a redirect or something?

    (just trying to figure this out, thanks)

    If you have two pages, with almost identical content then to keep Google from see sawing the pages in the serps you use a canonical.

    Are you creating these pages for the search engines to possibly index your content and provide "doorway pages" to funnel users ? That would get you into trouble.

    If you redirect the pages, that is basically analogous to removing the pages, the content will no longer be available because the bot / visitor / will be redirected to what ever page you redirect to. The content becomes basically useless and you might as well take the pages down.

    I would put the canonical on these pages you want to redirect and point to the pages you want everyone to see and use.

    Yes, the pages are almost identical.

    The only difference really, and reason I'm doing this, is to create a much better landing page
    for the content/keyword than the Wordpress default category pages.

    My page builder lets me include the posts from the Category dynamically - so now the
    Car Reviews landing page has more content, better UX, etc., and pulls in all the reviews
    from the category.

    Sounds like canonical is the right approach - really appreciate your help!

    Oh one more question...

    Should I noindex the Category pages after I do the canonical redirect? Is this a necessary step?

    Right now, my categories are indexed (Tag pages are not).

    Absolutely NOT !

    Do not do this. You want them indexed by Google. This way the canonical tags can do their job.

    Hi,

    First of all, create a Static Block with your landing page stuff in it. Let's call it "product_xyz_landing"

    In your backend go to Catalog -> Manage Products

    Find you product and click Edit

    Choose the Tab "Design" in the left"

    Now in Custom Layout Update

    Insert the following code

    <reference name="content">
    <action method="unsetChild"><name>product.info</name></action>
    <block type="cms/block" name="landing">
    <action method="setBlockId"><block_id>product_xyz_landing</block_id><action>
    </block>
    </reference>
