How not show a site map?

I have a site map that comes up in serps occasionally. I want Google, of course to crawl it, but don't want it in serps. Is that Possible?

Is it an HTML site map? If so add this to header: <meta name="robots" content="noindex">

Clicky, thanks, yes old html site, and the site map is one I made by hand.

Question: the site map which is already indexd and coming up in serps, will this affect that situation--ie, what currently is coming up, will it rectify that?
    2) more important will it block the spider from going to and using my site map? Again, I want the spider there, to give SEO juilce to the hundred links on site map, just don't want the actual site map page coming up on serps

Yes... If the sitemap is on an html page (rather than xml), adding the "noindex" tag will prevent Google from including the sitemap in serps results, but they will still crawl it and follow the links.

(In order to prevent google from following - and indexing - the links you would use: <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">).

1-Thanks Clicky, great, how does one even know to verify it is crawling the site map?

    2-Where do you put the <meta name="robots" content="noindex">
Is the placement of that critical?

3-Will serps that occur and show the site map now be rectified? I would assume so as time goes one or maybe not? Cat is already out of the bag for those?

You don't need a site map if Google is crawling your site, internal links will do the trick.

I started this site map 20 years ago by hand, so it's kind of a good organizational tool. But don't want the world seeing it. And some pages are orphans, don't link from the homepage etc..... or I mean, nothing links from the main site to many inner pages.

    Hi Keves
Can you please tell us, is it HTML sitemap or XML sitemap. Clicky B also asked the same question but you didn't reply to their question, he's asked about sitemap but you replied about the site.
So tell us about the sitemap, is it HTML sitemap or XML sitemap?

Thanks on this page for some reason, I don't see another head after the 1st one.. Does a page need a second </head>?

Just put it under your title element.

No, I don't think you can edit your post.
