.gov and .edu websites will trade, sell or give away links like any other website. Which is exactly why they don't really deserve extra effort.

It would depend on the site just like another site, but if your asking about a real educational site, you can gain links from them by offering quality content that will help them.

For example, say you find a collage site, if you have some relevant content or case studies which would be of value to them, they may place it on their site along with a link to your site for the effort. But simple asking a collage for a link exchange is very unlikely to happen unless you know someone that works on the site, or you could sponsor events etc if they have any.

If you have a search (search is in the top right) you are likely to find other threads on the subject with more advice and examples of how other gain such links.

Personally, I don't think .gov and .edu links offer more weight then .com links these days, so I don't think they are worth the extra effort it takes to gain a link unless the page is really worth the back link.

On the note of sponsoring events etc, I believe you can gain much better links from sponsoring events in general or sponsoring charities and charity events etc.

... if you arer asking about a real educational site, you can gain links from them by offering quality content that will help them.

We have hundreds of "real" .edu backlinks. It is really easy... give them content that helps them in the classroom, then get the word out to them so that they can share the link with their students. See... super easy.

We can get backlink from gov and edu website if we create a theme or develop any website or we can check how our competiitor has got links from them, but its not an easy way to get backlink for gov and edu sites.

f you think backlinking to .edu and .gov websites will give you good backlink credit, them I am afraid you have to look for another alternate.
Most of the .edu and .gov websites (if these websites are authority websites) have nofollow links.

Second thing, every backlink carries equal weightage whether they are .edu backlink or twitter backlink.
But if you really want some aid, you can use a tool called 'Keyword Country' for finding .edu and .gov backlinks.
