How do NY Times and Washington Post rank in Google?

I have always been told that websites must show search engines EXACTLY the same content that they show users.

The NY Times and Washington Post are clearly being indexed by Google. But when a user goes to the site, they are presented with a paywall.

You are mistaken, the NY Times is not behind a paywall...just go to www.nytimes.com and see for yourself.

If you have never failed in your life, you have never achieved anything Noteworthy !

You get several free views per month. Once you exceed that limit, they toss up a paywall.

Paywall means you need to pay a fee to access the site.

Obviously they are NOT requiring the Google crawler to pay... but they do require users to pay.

I think you're taking it too literal.
US websites sometimes hide GDPR banners from US users, but display them to people from the EU. Google won't slap you for that.

With this topic I am a bit of the fence. If someone is clicking on NYtimes in the SERPS and they get blocked, then that's bad for the user and I doubt G would be happy about that. Saying that, this is the nytimes. Google will know what they do - so by the looks of it, all is good I guess.

Actually I think they tell lies less often than Google.
