    if the backlinks my competitors are using is something that google sees as a good one?

    That requires research on your part.

    Things you must know and understand

    Current PR (page rank) which unfortunately we are no longer privy to. We can sort of guess-a-mate it's value. The higher it is the more valuable it is.. ie PR2 is better than PR1 ect. with PR9 the most coveted.

    How many OBL's does the referring site have
    How relevant the site is to your niche
    Do you have more than 1 link from this IP
    Do you have more than 1 link from this C-Block

    That is to name just a few of the things you need to know...

    Now one of the most major impacting factors, ( jmo ) ...

    Understand that Google does not count all links pointing to your site for every search query. According to Google, they consider different backlinks based on the Query Requirements. So you could theoretically have a PR5 or higher backlink from a relevant site and it be absolutely worthless.

    Developing a good backlink profile is vastly different from 3 or 4 years ago.
