How to Detect Hidden backlinks on a site?

Hello, A friend of mine mentioned that a competitors seo company has managed to hide their backlinks from showing when you perform a backlink checker search.

What process can you go about to find out where they are creating their backlinks?

    Hire them.

They most likely own the sites the links are coming from. You can probably use google's link operator to find a few of them, as they most likely are not hiding them from google.

Really interesting, but i think it's impossible to hide backlinks from backlinks checker tools. If backlinks checkers can't find backlinks, i think Google also can't index them, and what's the purpose of backlinks if they are not indexed?

    Highly incorrect.

You can disallow all bots from crawling a site other than Google bot.

This would stop links from showing in nearly all backlink checking tools on the market.

A good reason to use hidden backlinks is to help crawlability.

How would hiding you back links make your site easier to crawl? You really didn't think that hard about your reply did you!?

The reason for some companies hiding back links is to quite simply try and stop competitors from finding all the back links they have.

For example, if I owned a small network of niche sites that held some good authority pages and I wanted to place links on those to my main site in the same niche, I could stop all bots apart from the google and bing bots from having access to those sites.

This would stop most other bots such as those used by back link checkers including OSE etc from finding and listing those links which I don't want my competitors to know about.

Personally I have not seen the point in this because if I owned the sites and they where legit sites within the google guidelines, why hide them from my competitors?

After reading thru thls thread, I would just like to say the following.....

As I understood the original comment of this thread....

Some SEO company has figured out a way to keep competitors from finding there backlinks structure. They are not hidding their links in general but only when the competition trys to discover there origin.

Here is how I would do it.

Create web page as either asp, aspx or php so you have dynamic control of page creation on demand.

When ever a visitor comes to the site, check if it is Google or Bing or Yahoo or any of the other hunderds of search engines. This can be done by checking the user agent, ip address or combination of both (best). If not an acceptable bot then don't generate the links for display.

This would effectively hide the links from most tools. This would fool a lot of people and backlink tools. But then I wonder how long before Google and the rest considered these doorway pages and penalized the site?

In essence that is what they would be, doorway pages, content for the bots but not for humans.

I would consider this to be at best grey-hat tactics....

The easiest way to do this is disallow everything to crawl your linking domains (accept Google).

Now the only things that can see your links (from domains that disallow everything but Google) is Google link command & Google WMT, and checkers that take their data source from Google's API like http://www.webconfs.com/ (all of which provide only a sampling of links.

You can also do this via your htaccess redirecting checker IP to say a porn domain... sends competitors on a wild ride of ecstasy.
