If you're using a CMS like wordpress, install a plugin to take backups that you keep on a remote location (such as dropbox) so that even if the site does go down you can restore your site from there.

Fist take the backup of the website. Even the website is in Joomla or WordPress or any other CMS. Ask someone who has your hosting, whenever you or he update the website always take a backup. It may help you in future.

What you are going to need from him is FTP or SSH access. All a backup consists of regardless of what content management system you're using is all the files from the root directory and a backup of the tables.

If you have access to that and additionally can access the tables to export/download a backup you're gtg. Most hosts seem to favor Cpanel which means you'll get the tables out of PHPMyAdmin. It's a bit trickier if he's using something like Webmin, but if that's the case, generally CMS's have plugins to simplify the process of a backup and downloading tables. On Wordpress my favorite is wp-clone, not sure about the plugins on your current platform.
