Google wipes whole industry

But if you type 'phone sex' into google, it has cleared out all of the comemrcial rankings from the front page.

This is the first time I have seen google do this to a whole industry, and am suprised?

What do people make of this, have Google donw this anywhere else ?

What do you think of this ?

Don't normally search for 'sex chat', but I just did.

Found that the auto complete and site suggestions were inoperative. However, once told to search (hit enter) there were 138 million pages presented. Seems like it is working fine. Do people really sit around and message about sex? I guess it is the closest thing to safe sex there is.

I s'pose it is possible that these sites were mainly ranking by using tons of not very relevant anchor text links. The killing of the juice of these types of links therefore could have devastated this industry. If you combine this with these sites being parts of large reciprocal networks which also seemed to have been slammed…

Then what is left is a MASSIVE new opportunity…..

You can bet that industry is full of spam. But i didn't see any industry wiped out. Not sure what your doing wrong.

a search of sex chat returns sexchat.net, 321sexchat.com and sexchatsexchat.com #3.

I set the adult filter to strict and tried again, same results.

Its 'phone sex' not 'sex chat', from the UK on www.google.co.uk all commercial rankings have been dropped below position 50.

It looks very manual to me ?

Long tail keyword in the same industry have not been ill effected.

What does this tell us about what Google are doing regarding penalties over optimization and networks links ?

Yep I am seeing the same, Wikipedia, thesun, youtube, channel 4 etc.

Looks indeed like a -50 penalty for most sites that may have been ranking (do not search for this normally). It could also be that because these are big brands and generally authoritative the new algo has given a push to brands and so these websites are ranking better.

But I would agree with Gaz and it would probably be a whole set of networks and similar link profiles which have been demoted.

Different that that, I trawl these site often but I have some knowledge of SEO techniques which have been used.

There are some sites which categorically have not been using network links which have been hit, but lots of stuff going on outside google TOC.

I think we saw strong mix of combined spam techniques.

Interesting, there's another thread just started here where the guys escort service site just tanked and I know of another adult related site that bit the big one after the 24th. 3 sites don't make a study... just sayin

ok the commercial phone sex companies are gone from the organics BUT the adwords clients are still there.

Could it be that Google is doing that to get more coin?

When you set the filter to strict, the ads go away.
