    Lightbulb GOOGLE reads META !!!

    Hi ALL

while browsing seochat site, i saw number of peoples are saying that google doesn't read meta tag, BUT i just wants to know that my site is comig on number of keywords and those keywords are only in meta tag (neither in content nor in anchor text in BL). and while searching with those keywords google display page title as title and in description it shows keywords from meta tag list only... if google doesn't read meta tag ..then what is this.....

i am new seo... if anything else matters please do let me know...

    thank you all

Your 100% correct in that Google reads meta data and uses this data in the ranking of website, what you will see many people talking about here is the keyword aspect of the meta data, Google no longer uses this in the way it was went for, Google still reads this it can still play a negative aspect to your website ranking, but it no longer is used as a ranking increase in Google.

The keywords you rank for may appear in your backlinks' anchor texts.

The fact that Google shows your description meta tag is indeed a clear indication that the keywords are not in the actual content. However. The little script that shows the search word in bold in your "snippet" on the results page is NOT the same as Google's algo. So if your keyword accidentally shows up in the snippet, the little script has no problem highlighting it.

On the other hand, you may be on to something, but I doubt it. It's too soon for Google to place weight on the meta tags again....

Though google reads the meta keyword tag, the weightage given is ZERO.

I thing they do put a bit of weight on the meta tag.
Not a lot and almost nothing but i still think there is some given.

yes,I agree with Mick.... At the end each point get counted...

For some, it's enough to have one relevant Title to get Ranked... but for SOME... eventho they are 95%perfect...they may lose the #1... just coz one is there with 96% perfection..and the added 1% may have given on the Meta....

So , what on earth is stopping you to gain that 1%...isn't it you

Evidence: G follows the "noindex" and "nofollow" meta tags. G will list a site for a mispelled KW if it appears in the meta. The meta description is used in the SERPs.

How much meta effects the SERPs is of some debate but it is clearly not as much as it was back in the day (thanks, spammers!). However, it is clear G does read this stuff and follow the rules with it. It is worth including.

You can be #1 without meta. You can be #1 without BLs. You can be #1 with almost no content.

However, when the competition hits, what will push you to the top? Quality content and BLs for sure. Then its all the little things. It only takes a minute to add meta tags to a page - well worth the investment.

Nobody is saying meta is the way to get #1. It is an influencing factor. Many people think G ignores meta but this has been proven over and over again to not be the case.

Hmm, kmanig, before you disagree some more with the options people give, the facts they present and the balanced and open-minded view they convey, can I please ask you to share the url of your miracle page?

    Funny thread.

Offcourse G reads metadata, you could just as well posted something like "The SUN is SHINING"...

The keyword you're referring to is probably something like "aiyugakyhgakyutgeykgekugbkjeg", G never found it before except on this rare page where some ........ put it in his metadata and G thought, oh well wtf, let's just list it. No wonder you won't share the url

It does not have a positive effect, but it can have a negative effect if you stuff too many keywords in there, etc, etc 2002, etc. LOL
