It won't be anything to do with your sitemap. ^

It could be a few things, make sure you don't have nofollow, noindex on your homepage & check your robots.txt isn't blocking it.

I may be wrong but I believe nofollow has nothing to do with it. If a link is nofollow, the page will continue to get indexed except that the link will have no bearing on ranking said page.

Actually in this case you are .. no offense...

What Matt is speaking about is the Robots meta tag... (image is linked to reference site)

No worries re taking offence. I certainly would like to be corrected when I am wrong.

But re the nofollow meta tag, even if the nofollow is applied to a page and not to a specific link, that is still only applicable as to whether links on said page will be followed or not. For example, if you have the nofollow as a meta tag on the homepage, that will tell search engines not to follow all the links on said page. But that will have nothing to do with whether the homepage will be indexed or not.

On a different scenario, let's say that a link to the homepage from another page is nofollow. This will indeed tell Google not to crawl the link. But the indexing of that page is not dependent on that nofollowed link alone. Surely there will be other links pointing to it (some of which will be dofollow) especially that the page is a homepage. And if the URL is included in a sitemap (of course it is because it is the homepage), then the page will still get indexed despite the nofollow.

Sandy2012, Some WP themes use this to dissuade search engines from indexing, it is a common mistake to have a robot meta tag causing this issue.

Also to let the OP know we are talking about that specific tag (robots meta tag) vs possible confusion with rel=nofollow.
