I've been messing around with phpbb. You can mess around and make it look not like phpbb. Haven't got to the SEO bit on it yet but I'm told it's possible if you do stuff to the session IDs.
I considered phorum, but it's a bit basic - not such a good user experience. Doesn't look as nice either - you gotta consider your users here.. Best user experience has got to be vbullitin. I'm very happy here, and the guys must be doing good SEO if it's up there in the search for "search engine optimisation". Downside is it costs money. Don't have much experience in CGI, but I'd bet that doing stuff on a server with php, then serving it as a nice html page has got to be nicer for search engines. |

Invision is popular too. But I like vbulletin better.

Actually PHPbb requires NO PHP knowledge at all. The admin allows you to alter the appearance and functionality of the forum with a "wizard" type of interface. All point and click. The installer also sets everything up for you so no big deal there either.

No I dont think so. VBulletin didn't have them until the recent update either

Hey, thanks for that Chatmaster. I don't have my own php webspace but wanted a forum for one of my sites. That one seems to work quite well. You can do a lot with phpbb once you realise the useful files with your actual html have a .tpl extension. Why don't they tell you that? Took me ages to figure out they weren't generating html using Klingon. ![]() |
