    Fully explain canonical tag

So how EXACTLY does it work?

I know it basically tells google that www.example.com and example.com are the same... and I know the <tag> to enter.

But say on my www.example.com page the canonical tag reads "www.example.com"... does that do anything? Or is that just pointing to the same page?

If my real url was example.com, should the canonical tag read "example.com" or "www.example.com".

Does the tag technically tell google that the page your on points to a different page, or does it mean the other page points to it?

Hope that makes some sense haha!
