Sure ir helps! Forum = free content for your site and more search engines traffic.

From an SEO perspective, forums can be a mixed blessing. But from a site promotion perspective, forums can qualify as a great source of content. The net result of having great content is that many people will link to you. Presto! Improved ranking. Of course, if your content rots, well, you'll not move anywhere and it won't be worth the effort. Only place a forum on your site if you are passionate about that theme or a specific kind of information. Keep in mind that a dead forum will do absolutely nothing for you.

forum administration is time-consuming. be prepared before you launch one

An active forum, if well designed, can be amazing for a site....but if the links aren't crawlable (which is the case w/ many forums), it doesn't matter how active the forum is....so make sure the links are crawlable...

Yahoo is horny for forums, existance (but not the actual forum content). Google largely ignores them, IMHO.

Forums about a half decent topic tend to add genuine value to a web site, and may result in other webmasters linking to your site. --- which is good.
