These days, almost any link that you can create yourself is going to be worth very little.

If people would stop worrying about whats good for google and create blogs or articles that captures a readers attention because of their interest, this is what one should be aiming for...getting a link from it is just a by product. The user who's interest you've captured will more than likely click on the link as well as Google, but your going to get a bigger kick from that end user than from Google. That's called a win win

    i think both.
there are lots of forum with high PR and also blogs with High PR.
But to get backlinks from forum is little bit lengthy process where as blog commenting can be done in few minutes .if your comment got accepted than you are the luckiest man.

so marie what do you think? what are the most effective link building techniques now?
I think the game has really changed for most SEOs now. Gone are the days when you can throw up a bunch of directory links, buy a few links, spin a few articles and successfully rank a site. To repeat what I said before, I really do believe that (almost) any link you can create yourself is not worth much.

Think about this - why are links important? It's because Google counts a link to your site as a vote for your site. So, if you keep voting for yourself, does that make Google think that your site is better than another one? With the recent algo changes, Google got even better at eliminating "self votes".

So, ultimately now it does come down to creating good content. However, it's not all just about content. And it doesn't mean that the job of an SEO is defunct. I think that the SEOs who succeed now will be the ones who can create (or advise a team on how to create) good content and then know how to promote that content.

So, my goal now as I am "doing SEO" for my sites is to do the following:

    1. Brainstorm and research to come up with creative ideas that will create content that is really valuable to people in niche.

    2. Create that content.

    3. Promote that content. Now, for one of my sites, it has become quite large and promotion is not difficult for me. I can get the word out in a few channels and people spread it for me and I get links. I rarely actively do SEO for this site. But, for small business sites, there is more of a challenge. In this case, the skill of the SEO will be in knowing how to reach out to other sites to get people to link. Those links are not self made and are votes from other people. But, how are they going to know to vote for you if they didn't know anything about you? It's all about promotion!

There you go...that's a much longer way of saying, "These days, almost any link that you can create yourself is going to be worth very little."

Forum and blog commenting both are most important things to get quality backlinks and relevant traffic but keep in mind that, mostly use Do-follow links for posting because it is the fast way to get quality backlinks.
