    Flash Workaround. Will this work?

I have a friend who has a website who wants to increase his SE ranking. The problem however is in the way the site is setup. His home page consists entirely of flash. It's within an html page however the flash is the only item within the <body> tags.

His subpages on the other hand are all html and when you do a search on google, it does find some of these subpages but apparently not the home page.

So as a way around this flash home page problem, I was thinking of setting up an asp script that checks for the users connection speed. If it's slow (dial up), I'll send them to an HTML home page. If they're using broadband, I'll send them to the flash page.

Even though this will keep those with slow connections away from those annoying flash loading screens, it's really to give search engines an alternative home page to spider.

My only concern is that since I'll be immediatley redirecting users to one page or the other upon entering the site, that search engines may penalize me (I've heard that porn sites used to redirect users all the time to fool search engines about the content of their site). Is this true?

All in all, does this sound like the best workaround for my friends' situation?

    Thanks in advance.

Friend, this is cloaking. Search engines do not understand the fact that you are designing different pages to adjust internet speeds. The contents that you design for browsers should be the same as cached by search engines. If it differs, search engines will penalise you.

The best thing you could do on your friends site is add text links pointing to important pages in the fotter of the page so that spiders can follow.

Reg. flash, just finetune the movie and reduce its size. There are sites like axefeather.com displaying 3.4 MB flash movies, is your flash movie bigger that this?
