    An exasperated Matt Cutts ??!!

This should maybe be in chat or something, but has some crossover.

Just saw the latest Matt Cutts video and wanted to share it.

Now what he has to say on the subject of the thinking around ecommerce site content , quality, and uniqueness is probabaly worthy enough to be here anyway; but it isn't my reason for putting the link here.

It's how he reads out the question and the look on his face as he takes off his glasses; priceless.
    Cracks me up.

Anyway, enjoy as well as learn (maybe)

I would have face palmed over the origin of the question, not the question itself.

I think that was the exact moment the exasperation started, judging by his tone of voice.

His response though IMHO isn't a great one. Overstock provided customers (well students in universities mostly) 15% off for providing them a link from their student pages @dot.edu... Matt suggests "a gimmick" is OK but then from a content vantagepoint what can you do on a page that will naturally inspire ranks without acquiring "links?"

Honestly Overstock's approach was rather innovative and neither Google nor Matt Cutts can say "that's not value added for the patron"... still Overstock got a Manual Review for that.

So while I agree that the wrong question was asked... the wrong answer was also provided to the right question.

The simple fact is... it's a square peg in a round hole thing.

Has Matt really been asked so few interesting questions that he has to answer this.

Fathom, You watching the same vid as the rest of us? I mean I agree with your point but this vid was on unique meta data not link schemes.
Daren, I think it might be a matter of volume of the same question being high enough that he is asked to answer it.

Generally he didn't address the question, but I agree with the face palm. Can we get a smiley that is a clip of that. I think it might be... useful.

At face value you are not going to rank while editing Metas without any links for even mildly competitive phrases so the point is moot.

    Thumbs up

I totally agree with you Fathom, that Overstock is ruling in the industry since so many times & improving very much with unique styles as well getting great results from the online & other sources of medium like amazon and ebay. Overstock performs great & can compare the same topic(content issue) with amazon & ebay with the same store which is being running by Overstock.
I have found that what we are providing in Meta description data that is not actually in the page or somewhere on the page which is not visible or not on the right place on the page. That is creating a big problem. (that is my personal point of view.)

    Thanks
