Duplicate Meta Tags

A client recently asked me to review their site.

One of the stranger things I saw was duplicates of several META tags on some of the pages. For example:

<meta name="robots" content="all">
<meta name="revisit-after" content="15 days">

and then later in the <HEAD> was:

<meta NAME="robots" CONTENT="FOLLOW,INDEX">
<meta NAME="revisit-asfter" CONTENT="10 days">

It seems someone added tags without carring to remove the originals.

What effect will this have on the 'BOTs? I am assuming (read guessing) that one of the tags in each case is ignored, but which one? The first or the second.

Also, which tags would be better to keep?

Don't think it will matter

With these tags you can only tell robots what NOT to index or follow if they didn't find this tag they will automatically index and follow, if they do find it they will still automatically index and follow... so duplicating it make no difference.

Additionally they'll ignore the 'revist', 'revist-after' tags too, you can't tell robots what to do (if only).

I wouldn't worry.

Matt

So you are saying the "ALL" and the "FOLLOW,INDEX" have no use?

I do believe that the default is archive, follow, and index so the only need for robot metas is to disallow one or more of these default options.

Cheers,
