Duplicate Meta Descriptions Google's search engine currently recognizes and uses seven different meta tags. Of those tags, the most important ones are the title and description tags. With duplicate title tags, you end up with pages that appear the same to users browsing search results.

Google Search Console (former Google Webmaster Tools) reports you have duplicate meta titles or duplicate meta descriptions. Each URL should have unique meta tags so this is important to fix as soon as possible.

Yes, I do agree with you. Also, we must have at least 1 keyword in the meta description.

The problem is that the meta description is not a ranking factor, period. It plays no part in where Google ranks your site.

It has gone the way of "Keyword Meta Tag". No longer used for ranking purposes. It does however have the ability to increase your ctr. Provided you write a proper one. The trick is writing a good description, otherwise Google will change it to suit the query by the user.

It is even recommended by Google to leave blank rather than have a duplicate description.

Search Google for "is the metat description a ranking factor" see yourself. The number one answer according to Google is ....
(Google thinks that we are correct too !!!!)

If you have never failed in your life, you have never achieved anything Noteworthy !

Meta description is still an important factor SEO ranking & when powersuites & Matt Cluff have well explain about Duplicate Meta Descriptions so it should be changed my point of view.

Just try to use relevant Meta Descriptions for every page according to page need.

If your site has good content (as it should) your better off letting Google create your description. As for other search engines, I'd copy and paste what Google shows or create your own then change it accordingly.

I think Google is smart enough to recognize that. If you have 1 product in four colors, google will show the popular one in search results or relevant product related to the user query.

Recently i also seen in google searches that google not shown the metas description written by you but it shows there own which they think relevant. Also some says its 170 characters length and some say 300+, but Google shows in search engine results according to their Algos.

I'm going to pitch in because I think the original point has been lost.

A product page has multiple pages - e.g. Images, Description, Specifications, etc. Now they should not have duplicate meta description tags because the pages have different content and so they should have different summaries - i.e. different meta descriptions.

As a meta description is a search engines fall back by not providing unique (and sexy) summaries for each page you miss a golden opportunity to sell your content in the serps when a search engine can't identify a good snippet.

A lot of people here have said that meta descriptions don't affect rankings which is true but potentially incorrect.

Excellent meta descriptions = better CTR = more visitors = increased probability of getting a link = increased rankings therefore excellent meta descriptions = increased probability of better rankings so don't ignore it.

Also voted down here is: "Your meta description should contain your keyword"

Again its not going to help your rankings directly but if your page is about a specific topic or product then that topic or product should be mentioned in the meta description if it is an accurate summary of the page.

Yes I agree. Meta description tags are not tied to search engine rankings but are extremely important in gaining user click-through from SERPs. When it comes to e-commerce it's difficult to update meta description for all the product better make changes in color and other features like make and model.

Each page I have currently has it's own meta tag, however, on product pages that have more then 1 page, it will have a duplicate tag on page 2,3,4 etc. Should I be worried about these? Or should I be focusing on other things first?

    Thanks!
I would fix it by creating a dynamic rule. The more unique content you have, the more you control and less likely to Google to show some random thing you can't control.

If you notice in Search Console, even Google warns you about duplicated meta descriptions so that means you should fix them.

I am assuming you have the same problem with your title tags too and title tags are important when it comes to ranking.
