This is where the term "Earned Linked" comes into play.

Is the material I am linking to offer something I think would benefit most anyone that reads it or not, let that temper your judgement?

There is two things you need to understand about dofollow link.

    1. If you link to someone, then some juicyrank will pass to that link.

    2. When you link to non-affliate source you also get some trust score in back.

What is non-affliate source - Non affliate source means other people also link to them, for example Google official docs about canonical link tag is reference by many people.

What is trust score - When you link to non-affliate webpage, and both article are similar(for example similar keywords in title or heading) then you'll get some trust score based on similarity.

It means you get trusts core in back, but you also loose some Juicyrank.

So who'is bigger trust score vs Juicyrank?

It's based on who link to you. If you really reference good article then you'll get good amount of trust score but if you just link google.com or facebook.com because they are high authority then you will get very less trust score back.

So link out naturally, whenever it's necessary. The natural way is always benefits, because Google also think like that.

Always prefer do-follow links as major search engines are giving more priority to these type of links. Do Follow links will help to increase search engine rank faster.

It seems that do-follow links are most popular for SEO's. But Google likes stuff that looks natural. So I'd mix it up between do-follow and no-follow. If all your links are do-follow, statistically, that doesn't look natural. So throw in a few no-follow links. This is what I do and it seems to work well.
