Do links to your site's images improve SEO?

    Hi,

I was looking on Moz that some of the most linked pages on some websites are images.

I was wondering if links to images do count (somewhat) to increase a website's link profile.

If so, then hosting some good pictures, maybe with one of those catchy self-help quotes that so many loves to share, could be great SEO strategy.

I think it is a reasonable assumption. Very important to optimize images, so that Google will pick them up for their keywords. But I think in many cases, someone is more likely to copy and save the image, rather than link to it.

i agree that the majority, possibly the vast majority, won't link back or

Yet, many do, becasue I often see websites whose top pages are imgages.

Hell, my own website has a couple of images in the top 10 most linked pages.

I used a super technique to increase the chances of my images being linked to (and it's not because I came up with it ).

I a click to tweet plugin and insert many quotes in my articles and book summaries. Then I check back which quotes get the most click, which is likely are the readers' favorites. Then I make a catchy image with that quote on it.

I also put the logo of my website in the corner, so even if they steal it and don't like to it, it's still good branding.

It's a new project for me, but if results start showing I'll let you guys konw.

Umm actually I think you will be disappointed in your results. The links to images are just that links to images and not links to web pages.

Links to web pages have embedded links to images to make the page look pretty. Links to web pages are what is being counted.

Links to images are just that, links to images and not links to web pages. Links to images do not have embedded links to pages, so they will not help in ranking the pages they are on because they are images.

    (edited to add )
Images on your site my give rise to people linking to the page that the image is own if they add value to the content. See the article from ahref's posted below.

Google ranks web pages and images differently, this can be seen from the fact that there is Google.com and images.google.com

So it is my opinion .... and probably true that ...

They are not counted as links to diversify your backlink profile. They are not used in ranking desktop nor mobile pages.

But if you want to take advantage of images, here is a good read... it will save you time...

I always like to optimize all of my images. A lot of SEOs don't know how to do this, so it is usually easy to get them to rank for your keywords on the image tab in the SERPs. Just another way for people to find your site.

KnowOneSpecial, I'm a bit lost, you say links to images aren't very helpful to rank, but the article you link says that images are a great tool to increase your backlinks..

Ok,, it is confusing...you miss understand the reference article. I can see that... let me try and explain it different terms.

A standard web page can contain links to other pages and links to images to explain an idea or concept. These links are embedded in the contextual content and are counted as Votes for the page they point to.

So someone sees your graphic on a page with some good information. They link to it because the (1.) the content is great, (2.) It has an image that is just short of a 'Brainstorm epiphany". So the image catches the reader's attention and the reader links to the page that has the image on their site.

Understand this, they are linking to this page because the image is just that commanding, they are not directly linking to the image ! The page gets a boost from the backlink because without the image you wouldn't earn the backlink. This why it helps and is good for SEO.

(you with me so far ? )

An image on the other hand is a file with a link that points to it. The image is a pretty picture of 1's and 0's rendered by our computer or phone. When Google sees the image, it has no idea of what the image really is, well not yet, that is. But the image doesn't have a link to any web page embedded in it. Also if the image had a link in it, how would you read and follow the link? It is just a file of 1's and 0's.

( you still with me ?)

So when Google goes out and starts counting the links pointing to a web page, they see an image but the image does not have a link pointing to any web page any where got it ?

So on some page there may be a link to your image, but that will be in the form of www.expample.com/some-image.jpg, this is not a link to a page but to a file. Therefore no link juice is passed to the image.

That is why you should give credit to the owner of the image..

I found this image here on www.example.com/somepage.html ( this link points to the page the picture is on. ) This link carries juice to the site because this person shared the link to the page with the image. Not a link to the image. Got it now ??

Urls to pages are backlinks that bring in the juice, links to images are not backlinks that count for seo and images have no user usable contextual content. Therefore that is why it is important to help the image with alt image text, image title text and so forth. These attributes help the page and help Google understand what the pages with it's many images are about. Me just putting a link on one of my pages pointing to your images is not going to help your page rank. It will put the image on my pages, but unless I give you credit, I am basically just stealing the image for my own use.

    That explain it better ??

    Lol, loud and clear!

    I get it now.

Basically, great images can help you indirectly if someone links to the page instead of directly to the image and/or if the writer is nice (and savvy) enough to link to the original page.

Otherwise, you can load your image into third-party services to see who is using them and you can "nudge" them to provide a link.

I also create links through images.. but I think optimization of image helps to improve SEO than give link to images.

Let me help you out here, as someone who focuses a lot on e-commerce SEO and marketing. One of the directions I give to my clients is to take awesome pictures. In fact, I recommend they focus more on the pictures of their products than anything else. My data shows better pictures (unique, original, good quality, optimized so they load fast) get a lot of shares over the internet. And for all of my clients, those products that get a lot of share get the most traffic even better rankings.

Now I know you didn't ask about social shares but you asked about links, but my point was, any content from your website liked, shared, or linked by others will help your website.

Now to answer your question more specifically, links to your website's images, if images hosted don your website, will help definitely help your rankings in multiple way

    1. Help your domain authority and page rank (since links will include your domain name)
    2. Help the image ranking in google image search (don't forget that, many people use image search)
    3. If your image is optimized (named properly, has alt tags), then that "may" help the ranking of the page it is resided on
    4. More links mean more referral traffic.

I have one rule; Keep focusing on creating awesome content, and stop obsessing over links.

I too have recently discovered that in the backlink profile for one of our sites, a lot of the highly valued backlinks are from other sites to image file locations on our site (e.g mysite.com/image.png).

Since the tool I am using (SEMRush) is flagging them, would we be right in assuming that the backlinks to mysite.com/image.png provide juice? Since it sits on my domain?

Obviously appreciating the the point of optimising images is to make the site more user/Google friendly as opposed to snagging more backlinks.

You need to analyze the pages that have links to your images. Check if they are just using the images for their benefit or are giving you credit for the images.

If they are giving you credit for the image, then yes it will help maybe, depends on how they give credit. If they are just using the images in their content to dress their page, then no, they are just ripping your images off for use on their site.

The latter use is call "Hot Linking". Sometimes people do it to save bandwidth usage on their servers. This just means they are thieves stealing your content.

Thank you way2flowers, you have just given me a great idea: sharing them on image sites and on the Instragram business account.

People seem to go crazy for inspirational quotes there .
