Then I would keep the product page and leave them as discontinued along with the above recommendations I made earlier.

If these pages are driving traffic to your website, I strongly advise you don't cut them off.

Thank you! This gives me something to go back to my MD with as they are insistent about removing the pages all together.

If those products you no longer wish to supply them anymore but their pages are highly ranked, then there is actually nothing wrong with 301 redirecting them to another product that is very close to the one you no longer want to supply. If you think this is not a good option, then I would 410 them!

Again, never never delete a page, or a product page that is well optimized, ranking high and has the possibility of bringing traffic even if you intend to never carry or sale such product/service. I always start with a 301 redirect to a service or a product very similar to it, and if I really want to 410 it, I wait till it's no longer ranking or bringing any traffic. How much traffic do you need? One traffic that will bring 1 sale a day is better than 1000 visits a day with no sales.

I think you got some pretty good and very wise recommendations here and if you agree with a recommendation, tell your MD what you want and if they keep insisting to remove them without a good explanation, then I would look for another SEO company!
