    Arrow Country switcher

    Hi guys

In my tool to track Backlinks, I noticed that our website example1.be has more than 12k backlinks, but only 85 unique domains referring to it.

The explanation is fairly simple. We provide a country switch to send users to their preferred country. The switch contains 6 other countries, like this:

    • example1.nl (NL_NL)
    • example2.fr (FR_FR)
    • example2.be (FR_BE)
    • example2.lu (FR_LU)
    • example3.de (DE_DE)
    • example3.at (DE_AT)

Now I start seeing that every page on those respective websites generates a backlink to example1.be.

This does not result in a manual penalty by Google, but I'm sure doesn't look natural (although it actually is).

Any suggestions on the matter? Leave it like this? rel="nofollow"? Completely different approach?

    Thanks!

This is a really interesting question to me, so I'm going to move it to our Search Engine Optimization section where it might get more visibility.

    Ask yourself one question

Does it look spammy in any way ?? If it looks spammy then redesign it so it doesn't look like spamming..

Since you stated they were all no-follow you will not get a penalty for having the links. Google understands what you're doing and why. To me it seems quite natural what you are doing.
You are providing alternative web sites based on language.

If its working and it isn't broke don't try to fix it...

But other ways to eliminate work and web maintenance would be...buy example.com
then use either of two methods

    nl.example.com
    de.example.com etc etc

    or

    example.com/nl/
    example.com/de/ etc etc

Depending on the type of site it is... the second method is probably the better one for you.
But this all means a lot of work to get done..

Then you could 301 redirect all the juice from the other domains to their respective new landing pages on the one domain.
