Changing URL and effects on SEO

So I have a question about URLs and Domain Names and if changing an existing and established one to a new one will
negatively affect our SEO of the existing one.

Let's say we have a website that targets a specific city or town, and the website promotes local business' products and services.
Sort of like a local business listing site. And the URL is something like SpringfieldTownXYZ.com ( Has the city name somewhere in there ).

Now, the website turns out to be a success and we want to now expand to target national traffic and not just local traffic.
In doing so, we decide to change the name of the website and URL to a Brand Name. Let's say BOBO.com ( Just as an example )

Now, since the name BOBO.com is a new URL, Google will start you off way at the bottom until you build trust and so on.

Is there a way to transfer the "juice" of our old website/URL SpringfieldTownXYZ.com to BOBO.com so that we do not have to start from scratch?
Perhaps via redirects or canonical tags or other methods?

    Thoughts?

Yes, 301 redirect will do and canonical but I'm wondering why change the domain? If you want to target different market place why not just create a new page for that then do the same practice as before, that might work too,

Why change it to a new one? if the old one is kicking a$$ why change it? that makes no sense at all.
added..JSYK... You can brand without changing the domain name.

Yahoo brand...what do you mean by that? The domain name doesn't have to be your brand unless it's an exact match.

I see what he means though.

If the old brand was "Energy Elevation" (random words) and they wanted to rebrand to "Low Cost Energy Ltd" then the domains wouldn't make sense as they were the old brand name.

    You got it!!!
If my current domain name is SpringfieldBikes.com and I want to Brand the company to to a name like: yahoo ( As an example only ) and I stay with the old URL, there is no match. How can that be good branding practice?
