There isn't one magic bullet to answer the question. Use Overture and Wordtracker (or Digitalpoint's combo tool), ask friends what they would search for, logfile research, and use your own judgement based on your experience with the topic, etc. Sorry, but it requires a combination of tools, research, and judgement to make those decisions.

Answer: Your brain

That's the easiest (insert sarcastic joke here) tool to use, and the most effective. I would highly advise also supplementing it with what dazzlindonna has mentioned.

Total KW tool set:

- WordTracker, Overture tool, DP combo tool or related tool (to evaluate number of searches for given terms and see related terms)
- Competitors websites (a little benchmarking to see what the top competitors in your industry are using)
- Customers, clients, others in the company (gotta learn the industry's lingo)
- Site stats and logs (to see what's getting you traffic that you might not have thought of)
- Trial and error

I will spoonfeed somethin to you....

Take a pen and a paper.

1. Type the keyword in google...did you? did you? No ?---- do it then

Next

2. Look for the descriptions of the result. Read AT least 50--- Come on Yaar do it.

Next

3. Look for Keyword associations in the Descriptions<---- this is important.
Note all the Different associations of the Particular word with others.

eg. SEO

I can see the following associations ( depends on what you see!!! isnt it?)

SEO Help
SEO resources
SEO Toolkit
SEO blog
SEO Book
Advanced SEO Strategies
SEO Consultants
SEO) companies
SEO web promotion
SEO Services

I hope you are getting me. Read the descriptions of 50 top results or as many as you like!!

Pickup your assocaitions !! Use your Brain too ....

These associations form your Keyword pickups!! <---- here was born a term !! KP
he he he he.....

I would also suggest going for very targetted words and not general terms. If you have a travel website for brazil, for example, target "Brazil Travel","Brazil Trips","Brazil Vacations" and so on and stay away from just the term "travel" because it's pointless.

Also setup an AdWords account and enter in all your terms that you are interested in observing and run a campaign (MAKE SURE TO USE THE CONVERSION TRACKING) for a week or so. After your trial run look at what keywords gained the most impressions, clicks and sales conversions and target those. At least you'll have a good idea of what people are looking for/typing before you jump into SEOing the site head first.

Will take two to four weeks.....

Google is increasing its database, so might get spidered less often, and late too......
