    Canonical tags...

Could someone please explain to me what canonical tags are? I've come across this on a client's website?

"Add a rel="canonical" link to the <head> section of the non-canonical version of each HTML page."
Basically it says to Google... theres another page identical to this but at this address.

    So you can have

    http://site.com/article-name-here
    or
    http://site.com/post.php?id=4&cat=5
