    Canon Fodder: Gov SEO regulation?

Gonna toss this one out since it's quite the hot potato. Read [ulr=http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/07/13/the-time-has-come-to-regulate-search-engine-marketing-and-seo/]this article[/url] first.

My take? The analogies are poor and the arguments are weak, unless you're doing perpetually poor in rankings.

    1. Forced disclosure of algorithms would be disastrous. Once you know how to get what Google offers, you no longer need Google. Worse, you would know what the engines like. Spam would explode as people knew what to do without question.

    2. Governments are poor at managing pretty much everything. As a poster I saw once said, "Government: If you think the problems we make are bad, just wait until you see our solutions!". I have little doubt Democrats would love to regulate the search industry but it's important to note that Google doesn't own the industry (although they are a strong #1). Everyone wants to beat them and that encourages innovation, in both Google and elsewhere. Even MS has raised its game.
