Yes it does affect the website ranking..

Because the http and https protocols are considered as separate site, then there’s really a possibility that the main site will be penalized for having duplicate contents. Yet, generally, when the search engine determines such defect, it would take only one and reject the other.

The problem of https can also be directly connected with links since, as earlier noted, other site administrators use it against their competitors.

There is more to it than meets the eye, Google out of nowhere saying that moving over to HTTPS will give a ranking boost in the SERPs sounds a bit unfair to me. Many people might rush to getting SSL installed on their websites. But most might not know that moving over to HTTPS is complicated, it might cause harm if you do not follow entire guidelines.

And also this seems like a business move by Google to increase their profits than to make internet more secure, <snip>

I'm a flabadoodling idiot who thought I could copy paste text from another site into this post, plus have it be completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand, and expected to get away with it. Moderator GabrielG caught me, spanked me, and banned me to the netherwebs.

Changing from http to https can lead you into troubles, first of all your site will get many 404 errors since these changes will lead to unfounded pages because of change in urls. If the old format had links, you will have to edit all links making them to point to your new url format. Many issues will begin to unfold themselves, for me, I see its better to start a new site with https from scratch and put a redirect to the old site that changing it directly.

It can, but my point is your website needs https security if you are dealing with some online transaction of data and/or money. When you are running a simple information based website (no transaction required), I don't see any reason you need https layer. Even recent study (see the post at search engine land) shows that there was no impact on rankings after sites migrated to https from http.

it will not affect your ranking but for OFFPAGE Optimization . you have to care for link name. because no any site will take by default "https://" So, you have to mention "https://"..

So, http:// more useful than https://

Hey, yes friend you are right it is not big factor at this point of time.. But later on it will gain its importance, as for Google Security is one big thing to work on..

So don't take it litely, it is a best time to move your domain from Http to Https to taste future ranking on Google.

    All the best.
